چکیده

The Electromagnetic Calorimeter of the CMS experiment, consisting of about 75000 Lead Tungstate scintillating crystals, aims at achieving an extreme precision in photon and electron energy measurement. Since the ultimate energy resolution will be affected by the crystal light yield and its uniformity along the crystal axis, systematic measurements of both these parameters are performed in the Regional Centers where the calorimeter modules are assembled. This paper reports on the light yield measurements in Rome Regional Center and investigates the use of these measurements to define an intercalibration procedure for each crystal. For most of the crystals this will represent the only precalibration available at the beginning of the experiment. For this purpose, data obtained in Rome Regional Center have been analyzed in detail to evaluate the currently available precision and to identify ways to improve it. The long term stability of the measurements is investigated as well.

Monitoring Light Source for Cms Lead Tungstate Crystal Calorimeter at Lhc

Light monitoring will serve as an intercalibration for compact muon solenoid (CMS) lead tungstate crystals in situ at the large hadronic collider, which is crucial for maintaining crystal calorimeter’s subpercent constant term in the energy resolution. This paper presents the design of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter monitoring light source and high-level distribution system. The correlatio...

High-energy proton induced damage study of scintillation light output from PbWO4 calorimeter crystals

Eight PbWO4 crystals produced for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at LHC have been irradiated in a 20 GeV/c proton beam up to fluences of 5.4 × 10 p/cm. The damage recovery in these crystals, stored in the dark at room temperature, has been followed for over a year. Comparative irradiations with Co photons have been performed on seven other crystals using a dose rate of 1 ...

Tools for the inspection of PWO//APD gluing

The light produced in each of the 60 thousand PbWO4 (PWO) crystals of the CMS barrel electromagnetic calorimeter will be readout by Avalanche Photodiodes (APD). The ratio detected to emitted photons also depends on the PWO//APD gluing quality that must be checked before the crystal mounting inside the calorimeter. In this paper two different tools are proposed: one for the visual inspection of ...

RADIATION INDUCED COLOR CENTERS IN A LA DOPED PbWO4 CRYSTAL

This report presents result of a study on radiation induced color center densities in a La doped lead tungstate (PbWO4) crystal. The creation and annihilation constants of radiation induced color centers were determined by using transmittance data measured for a PbWO4 sample before and during 60Co -ray irradiation at a dose rate of 15 rad/hr. Following a model of color center kinetics, these co...

The measurements of magnetic elde ects on scintillating tilesJ

We display the eeects of the magnetic eld on the light yield of the tiles used in the Atlas Hadronic Calorimeter. Covering a large range, from the Earth eld to about 1 Tesla, these results are in agreement with other experiments showing that the light yield of polystyrene based scintillator is increased by about 1% below about 100 mT, with a jump of about 0.6% at 1.2 mT and a 1% plateau startin...
